In recent years, universities, non-university research institutions and publishers have promoted the creation of infrastructures for the globally unambiguous identification of researchers by using and implementing the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) in many places. The ORCID DE project provided significant support for this development process, including the provision of information and the organisation of workshops. The planned ORCID DE 2 project, initiated by the German Initiative for Network Information (DINI), aims to expand and consolidate the existing network of scientific institutions that have integrated ORCID into their infrastructures. The focus is both on expanding support for institutions and target groups interested in and using ORCID (e.g. publishers and research funding bodies) and on an identification system for organisations that is linked to ORCID in the long term. The project partners want to participate in this development from the very beginning, representing the German scientific institutions. In addition, new application contexts of ORCID (e.g. in workflows within the framework of publication fees) are to be tested and evaluated.
