EFFects of EXPosure and Cognitive-behavioural Therapy for chronic BACK pain (EFFECT-BACK)

Subject Area Personality Psychology, Clinical and Medical Psychology, Methodology
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 429500422

The aim of the proposed multisite study is to evaluate whether a short, economical version of the Exposure treatment (EXP) for chronic low back pain will be more successful than Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment (CBT) in reducing pain related disability. The second aim of our study is to move a further step toward tailored treatment for chronic pain by evaluating whether individuals, who have higher scores on a behavioral avoidance test will rather benefit from EXP then from CBT. We also will test whether individuals who have lower scores on Coping will rather benefit from CBT then EXP. The study will take place in both, outpatient psychological and in multidisciplinary pain clinics. We aim at including 380 participants from 5 sites. Our hypotheses derive from the results of a previous pilot study including 88 participants.
