Development and electrochemical characterization of stainless, TIG welded precision tubes made of CrMnNiMoN austenitic hot-rolled steel strip (T05#)

Subject Area Metallurgical, Thermal and Thermomechanical Treatment of Materials
Term from 2019 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 54473466

Project Description

The aim of the transfer project is the conception, processing and research of cost-effective, weldable, austenitic, stainless CrMnNiMoN steel with TRIP/TWIP properties on a laboratory scale, as well as its industrial production and verification in the manufacture of TIG-welded precision tubes. The steel is characterised by a reduced nickel content and elevated manganese and nitrogen concentrations to decrease the alloy costs. TRIP/TWIP effects lead to a high deformation and hardening capacity of the austenitic steel during tube production and open up the possibility of material savings in the sense of a leaner product design. The work includes intensive investigations of pitting and repassivation behaviour as well as the sensitivity against to stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen induced cracking on the hot rolled strip and the TIG welded material.
