This project examines fasting and the voluntary abstaining from food as a practice as well as an object of political, medical and religious debate in early modern Russia and Poland-Lithuania. It will analyze the everyday practice of eating or not eating as a tool in political and social negotiations of power. The project focuses on multi-religious and multi-ethnic regions and thus centers the question of how the practice of abstaining from food produces identity.
