Optimal design of chiral structures (C05)

Subject Area Mathematics
Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term since 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 258734477

The concept of electromagnetic chirality has been introduced to describe differential interactions of scattering objects or media with electromagnetic waves of positive and negative helicity. Associated electromagnetic chirality measures allow us to rank different scattering objects or media concerning their chiral response. We will use this to: (1) design an infrared cavity that will only trap light of one handedness, (2) evaluate the potential of all-optical methods for enantio-selective filtering and separation, (3) continue to work on the optimal design of nanoparticles that possess large measures of electromagnetic chirality, (4) study electromagnetic chirality and corresponding shape optimization problems in the time-domain, and (5) work on applications of our optimized nanoparticles as building blocks of chiral metamaterials. The second goal is to gain deeper insight into the theory of electromagnetically chirality.
