Low-temperature combined scanning tunneling and atomic force microscope with vector magnetic field and ultra-high frequency access

Subject Area Condensed Matter Physics
Term Funded in 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 426950037

The purpose of this proposal is to finance a combined scanning tunneling and atomic force microscope which will allow to study the static and dynamic properties of atomic and molecular structures on surfaces at temperatures down to 300 mK and in a vector magnetic field of up to 9 T. In addition to determining the fundamental electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties of self-organized structures, the instrument will also be able to build, manipulate, and address artificial structures at the atomic level. The main research area of the instrument will be the investigation of spin phenomena, highly correlated states, and quantum effects on single and coupled magnetic atoms and molecules. In particular this instrument will be used for time-resolved electrical pump probe measurements as well as for the development of quantum-mechanically phase-coherent addressing methods by coupling microwaves into the tunnel junction.
