Using validated specimen geometries, the fracture mechanical property profiles of the different materials, the preformed joining parts and the joined structure are determined. Based on these results and results from other subprojects, the fracture mechanical concept will be optimized, extended to self-piercing riveting and used for numerical modeling and performing crack growth simulations. This allows to predict the direction and growth rate of a crack in joined structures and to improve or even avoid fatigue crack propagation using process-side and design measures.
