Due to the low ductility, cast components made of AlSi alloys can only be joined mechanically to a limited extent, as cracks occur. To increase the suitability for joining, the solidification conditions are adapted to the individual joining process to enable the crack-free joining of Al castings. For this purpose, top hat profiles are cast in the sand as well as gravity die casting and, in the further course, top hat profiles with a site-adapted microstructure are produced using a tempered gravity die casting mould. The data obtained are used to extend the microstructure joining suitability correlation to include the influence of grading.
