Scalable Pervasive Health Environments

Today, people are very aware of the importance of a healthy behavior and lifestyle, but many people experience a lack of motivation to change their lifestyle over a long-term. Exergames are very helpful for motivating users to conduct exercises regularly, but so far they have not proven a long-term motivation. At the same time, digital technologies that have the potential to provide motivation, guidance, and analysis for physical activity are becoming pervasively available. They are, however, not connected, which leaves considerable potential for synergistic interactions posing challenges of controlling and interacting with ensembles of different input and output devices as addressed in the call for the SPP. This project will research and create pervasive environments that can improve this. The types of physical activities and exercises that are helpful for - and preferred by - a user are very personal and can change considerably over time. Therefore, one of the tandem projects will address research area 1 (“Designing Scalable Interaction Paradigms for Pervasive Environment”) by examining a modularized system which allows combining different kinds of sensors (e.g. fitness tracker, sensormat) as well as making old sports equipment “smart” by adding new sensors. These sensors can be integrated into existing exergames and off-the-shelf games, enriched with an adaptable feedback system, providing possibilities for new forms of scalable pervasive multimodal interaction, as well as measures for exercising progress. The design, long-term evaluation and improvement of such systems are major challenges due to the complexity of the combination of different devices and modalities. Therefore, the second tandem project will address research area 2 (“Methods to Study Interaction Paradigms in Pervasive Computing Environments”) by examining how to leverage virtual and augmented reality along with necessary techniques from data analysis and machine learning to improve the data-driven development and long-term evaluation of pervasive environments for health.
