Modulo p representations of p-adic reductive groups

Let p be a prime number and let F be a p-adic field, and let G = GLN(F). The immediate goal is to construct smooth irreducible representations of G on Fp-vector spaces. I intend to generalize a construction, which is available for N = 2 [10], [6] to arbitrary N. Understanding of such representations should shed light on the conjectural mod p and p-adic Langlands correspondences.
