The aim of this proposal is the use of forming induced phase transformation in metastable austenitic steels to modify surface layer of complex massively formed components. The effect occurs in production phase as well as use phase and the combination of both. In particular, further knowledge of local strain hardening and martensitic phase transformation in the area of the surface layer in the manufacturing- and use phase is necessary. In order to take influence on phase transformation of the surface layer, a detailed consideration of the tribological relationship between tool (surface) and workpiece (lubrication) is required. The steel investigated in this proposal is a metastable austenitic 1.4404. A ball bearing inner ring is particularly suitable here as a demonstrator component, since the active surfaces get transformed on the one hand in the forming process (production phase) and on the other hand also by the running - in endurance (use phase).
