Das übergeordnete Ziel des DOME SPP ist es, Lösungen für grundlegende Fragen des Elementtransports und der Mineralisierung in heterogenen chemischen Systemen zu finden, die komplex, dynamisch und hochgradig transient sind. Das Thema Erzgenese wurde lange Zeit aus einer kombinierten Feld-/Laborperspektive oder aber experimentell in vereinfachten Systemen untersucht. Selten wurden diese Techniken auf koordinierte Weise mit einer dritten Perspektive, der numerischen Prozessmodellierung, integriert. Originalität und Innovation dieses SPP liegen in der Koordination empirischer Feldstudien, die den geologischen/mineralogischen Rahmen natürlicher Erzsysteme definieren, mit experimentellen Arbeiten und numerischen Modellen, die ein quantitatives Verständnis der beteiligten Prozesse liefern. Dieser koordinierte Ansatz ist wichtig, um ein Verständnis von natürlichen Erzsystemen zu erreichen, welches z.B. dazu führt, Explorationsmodelle für tief bedeckte Lagerstätten zu entwickeln. Das Programm umfasst zwei sich ergänzende Themenbereiche: A) Erzbildende Systeme - natürliche Randbedingungen, d.h. feldbasierte Studien an beispielhaften natürlichen Systemen, B) Simulation der Prozesse - Randbedingungen der Metallmobilisierung und -ausfällung, d.h. Laborsimulationen zur Bestimmung von thermodynamischen und kinetischen Parametern, die für die thermochemisch-mechanische Prozessmodellierung von Erzsystemen benötigt werden. Das SPP wird diese beiden Bereiche integrieren, um Verbindungen und Rückkopplungen zwischen Schlüsselprozessen in Erzsystemen zu untersuchen und integrierte Modelle der Erzbildung abzuleiten
