The central unit 'Cell Sorting and Cell Analysis' (Central FACS Facility, CFF) at the university hospital Regensburg was founded in 2004 and guarantees all members of the university and the university hospital access to operator-based fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) for research purposes. Presently, the central FACS facility serves over forty users from eleven different institutes and clinics. So far, one high speed cell sorter from 2004 – the only one available on site - is used for this task, which features 3 lasers and up to 9 fluorescence parameters. Due to the founding of the Regensburg Center for Interventional Immunology (RCI) with the establishment of 3 new chairs and the increase in members of these institutions the CFF has reached its capacity limit and urgently needs to acquire a second high speed cell sorter. Furthermore, the application of increasingly complex fluorescence staining panels for positive and negative selection and isolation of rare cellular subsets requires the availability of an instrument with additional lasers and a considerably increased number of sorting parameters. In addition, the fact that the sorter is integrated in a class II biosafety hood guarantees increased operator and product safety, an important aspect for those research projects dealing with non-screened patient material or genetically altered cell products.
