In the context of research programs oriented towards chemical biology, molecular pharmacology and drug delivery, the instrument is to performed routine real-time (i.e. immediate access by multiple users) and accurate chromatographic and mass spectrometric analyses of crude synthetic samples, i.e. prior to purification, as well as the exact mass determination of purified samples. The analysis of crude samples is a critical step to ascertain the presence of the desired product prior to purification as well as to identify possible side reactions. In contrast to other liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry instruments available in the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, the new instrument should be adapted to large synthetic molecules, i.e. with m/z up to 20 000 Da. Typical samples include large synthetic foldamers specific to new research in the department of Pharmacy, as well as large peptides, small chemically synthesized proteins, foldamer-peptide and foldamer-protein covalent adducts, and complex lipid/polymer/nucleic acid conjugates. While the need for such analyses was only diffuse throughout the faculty of chemistry and pharmacy, punctual need being expected by many research groups, it became acute after the installation of a new Chair at LMU in September 2017. The instrument is thus to be intensely used by this group while being accessible to the entire Faculty.
