Subject Area

Project identifier

Today we can testify that in most European countries a new history of ideas evolves. Whereas Anglo-Saxon research mainly focuses on the "New History of Ideas", formulated by Pocock and Skinner, German, Austrian and Italian research predominantly ties in with a dual tradition: on the one hand it follows Kosellecks approach to a "History of Concepts" and on the other hand following Luhmanns system-theoretical approach.
The principal object of the International Research Training Group is to connect these different, nationally diversified research traditions using a concept of political language. The postgraduates of the Research Training Group, coming from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Austria, should learn to handle with these different traditions. Afterwards they should use the methodical basis for their own purposes. The postgraduates work on different historical eras as the ancient world, medieval times, early modern and modern times and contemporary history. Their projects deal with the representation of authority, the definition of rulers virtues, political communication in foreign policy, the idea of resistance in political discourse of modern times, the comprehension and the language of the city as holy body in the middle of the 17th century and many others. Their methods are those of political theory, the history of law, cultural and social history.
