Final Report Abstract

An earlier dive with the Japanese deep sea submersible “Shinkai 6500" at the Ohmachi seamount, which is part of the Izu-Bonin-Marianas island arc system, delivered relics of amphibolites. These amphibolites were exhumed and transported to the surface together with serpentinite schists. 6 dives with the submersible wer performed to gain additional samples at the base of the Ohmachi seamount to better reveal the exhumation history and the reason for exhumation within an intraoceanic subduction zone. The applicant has been a member of the diving crew invited by the Japanese marine science organisation JAMSTEC. However, samples containing relics of eclogites were not found. This was one of the main targets of the cruise which could not be reached.
