We will study high-quality few-layers-thin antiferromagnetic semiconductors. First, we will characterize them by analyzing the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of the ground state by a wide variety of spectroscopic approaches utilized as function of several experimental parameters. Then, we will employ the knowledge developed during characterization to optically manipulate spin on the ultrafast timescale. In particular, we aim at inducing and controlling coherent spin dynamics by direct illumination and via photogenerated strain waves. A femtosecond quench of the long-range order will be attempted as well. As a final step, under the same excitation conditions as for ultrafast magnetic manipulation, we will disclose the dynamics of the electronic band structure throughout the whole Brillouin zone.
