Design, synthesis and photophysics of metal-doped nucleic acids

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term since 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 417637295

In this project, nucleic acids with metal-based luminescence will be synthesized and characterized. In doing so, their photofunctionality will be investigated, opening up the opportunity for subsequent potential applications in biomedicine and functional microscopy. Towards this end, ligand-based nucleoside analogs will be synthesized, reacted with suitable transition metal complexes and incorporated into oligonucleotides by using automated solid phase synthesis. In addition, proximally (via the coordination plane) and distally (via an ancillary ligand) intercalating metal complexes will be synthesized and investigated. The doped nucleic acids obtained via these three strategies are ideally suited for an investigation of fundamental photophysical properties of polynuclear luminescent metal complexes.
