The research network "German-Jewish film history in the FRG" aims to connect recent and ongoing research on individual Jewish filmmakers in the FRG in order to investigate these actors’ significance within the context of the representation of Jewish issues, or issues perceived as Jewish, in German film and television. Through this focus on filmmakers and their networks we seek to connect with the international exchange between the academic disciplines of Jewish studies and (Jewish) film studies. Central concepts and issues are taken from this recently emerged field of study and appropriated for the specific context of the FRG. For this purpose, the network adopts the working concept of a German-Jewish film history, understood as an open complex of questions and problems which we aim to interrogate for its potentials and limits within the time frame of the post-1945 FRG. Both cinema and television are taken into account. The focus lies on the Federal Republic pre-1990, but comparisons with the GDR and the FRG post-1990 are continuously integrated in order to achieve a balanced account.
