Experimental and numerical investigations of the three-dimensional boundary layer flow in radial impellers with tandem blades

Subject Area Hydraulic and Turbo Engines and Piston Engines
Term from 2018 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 416098161

By the application of tandem blades the pressure increase of the flow is split on two blades. The blade arranged in the rear part of the tandem blade has thin, "sane" boundary layers in the leading edge region. Therefore the remaining pressure increase in flow direction is realized with approximately fresh boundary layers in the leading edge region. The question arises whether the principal of tandem blades can also be applied for radial impeller pumps in such a way that an improvement of head, efficiency and/or the NPSH-behavior can be reached. The knowledge in the open literature about this for radial impeller pumps is small in comparison with the literature about axial tandem blades. Therefore tandem blades are a research topic for radial impeller pumps.
