This proposal outlines the need for a new transmission electron microscope for the Institute for Materials of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. We apply for the replacement of a 27 year old 200 kV transmission elecetron microscope with a LaB6 cathode, with a scanning and EDX unit. The objective of this proposal is to obtain funds which allow to replace this old machine by a new one. The new TEM must also be able to operate at a maximum of 200 kV. It should be equipped with a LaB6 cathode and should have an EDX unit and a scanning mode. The instrument is needed for various research tasks outlined in the proposal. One research focus is on elementary deformation and microstructural evolution processes in single crystal Ni and Co-base superalloys. Moreover, shape memory alloys receive special attention. A double-tilt cooling holder is also applied for, which allows to observe the microstructural features of martensitic transformations in situ.
