Cardiac dysfunction after trauma is associated with altered cardiac cell-to-cell and intracellular integrity. Furthermore, danger associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and complement-activation products, both known to be elevated after major trauma, have been demonstrated to interact with cardiomyocytes, resulting in electrophysiological and molecular alterations and inflammation. Therefore, this project investigates whether serum components from patients with multiple trauma lead to molecular, structural, and functional alterations of cardiomyocytes in vitro. In murine blunt chest trauma, cardiac dysfunction, cardiac damage, and inflammation will be assessed and proposed to be aggravated in a combination with unilateral femur fracture and attenuated in the presence of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).
