We investigate cause and effect relationships leading to surface soil moisture patterns using new observational opportunities arising from recently and soon to be launched space-borne polarimetric SAR systems. Combined with a model-based approach we particularly investigate the impacts of plant growth dynamics and agricultural management. By integrating remote sensing and model-based methods we will contribute to a) a better understanding of interactions of natural processes and agricultural management, b) an improved understanding of scaling properties of soil moisture, and c) an improved soil and plant parameterization for CLM.
