While IBD has been associated with alterations in microbial composition, changes in the gut metabolome, the molecular interface between host and microbiota, are less well understood. Our preliminary data suggests that bile acids (BAs) influence IFN-mediated cell death and that intestinal inflammation is associated with increased BA signaling in the gut. These data implicate a potential mechanistic link between enhanced IFN signaling, microbial dysbiosis and Paneth cell death controlled by BA signaling. We will therefore investigate the impact of BA signaling on IFN-mediated cell death activation and immune-epithelial communication.
