Mitophagy is essential in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and preserving energy metabolism. This project builds up on the original observations that mitochondrial unfolding protein response is a potent inducer of mitophagy and that increased mitophagy is associated with cellular quiescence exit. The project will evaluate whether targeting mitophagy could serve as a novel strategy to manipulate cell cycle transition and senescent cell elimination in developing and aged tissues.
