The specific objectives of the research project are:1) Specification and development of (sports) economic instruments to analyse career-related decisions made by soccer players according to the characteristics of the employment market in professional football. 2) Empirical check on the career-related decision-making processes of (former) professional football players as inter-temporal allocation choices according to the economic concept of the lifecycle thesis. 3) Identification of factors relevant to success for the critical transition from the competitive to a non-competitive career by athletes, taking account of the given structural conditions. 4) Improvement of the academic evidence level for developing and modifying (new) preventative concepts/approaches to managing careers and solving problems relating to the competitive and post-competitive career progressions of top athletes.
