The research project delineates the development of an organocatalytic oxyfunctionalization reaction through photomediated oxygen atom transfer. Relying on the direct C‒H bond oxygenation via photomediated fragmentation of amine N-oxides, this approach will provide a chemical tool for the direct introduction of an alcohol functionality. The specific aim is to develop an efficient and practicable methodology that allows the direct chemical synthesis of oxygenated pharmacophors, biologically active compounds and xenobiotics that are otherwise accessed via enzymatic routes. Thus, elaborating a methodology for the direct C‒H bond oxygenation via photomediated fragmentation of amine N-oxides would not only address a formidable challenge in organic synthesis, it would simultaneously provide a chemical equivalent to the mammalian arene and alkane monooxygenases.
