In the People's Republic of China, the expansion of social insurance has been accompanied by program segmentation between relatively generous social insurance schemes in urban areas and rudimentary social insurance schemes for rural populations and migrant workers. Project B05 seeks to understand the inclusion and benefit dynamics in the risk areas of old age, sickness, maternity, and unemployment since their introduction. Informal practices, political repression, global economic interdependencies, and ideational linkages in the East Asian region are given particular attention as explanatory factors. When collecting data, focus is placed on gender inequalities.
