Project B04 examines the causes of inclusion and exclusion of immigrants in national welfare states. Based on data concerning the welfare rights of immigrants for 39 member states belonging to ASEAN, the EU, Mercosur, and the OECD between the years 1980-2018, and with the help of four country case studies (Malaysia, Thailand, United Kingdom, Switzerland), we analyze how political parties and civil society actors influence inclusion or exclusion processes as well as which processes and actor constellations can be identified in both the Global North and the Global South and in democracies as well as autocracies.
