Stratigraphic architecture of carbonate platforms during the Early Paleogene

Subject Area Palaeontology
Term from 2018 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 398371307

The objective of this study is to answer the question of what is the shape and stratigraphic architecture of carbonate platforms during the crucial time interval of the warmest episode of the Paleogene greenhouse? This goal will be achieved by investigating the evolution and depositional geometries of the exceptionally well-developed Paleocene-Eocene carbonate platforms located in the Offshore Indus Basin. As per our knowledge, these platforms are unique as being imaged in their entirety, thus showing the large-scale platform architecture. We will achieve this objective by performing the following work: A revision of the established stratigraphic framework for the Paleogene carbonate succession on newly available regional seismic data; A characterization of the seismic architecture and depositional geometries, and establishment of a sequence stratigraphic framework for the shallow water carbonate sequences, and as well as an analysis of the regional and global mechanisms controlling the development of the Paleogene carbonate systems and their comparison with other Indo-pacific carbonate platforms.
