Predicting viral escape as a consequence of antibody-mediated selection pressure (B01)

Subject Area Virology
Term since 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 325931972

Project Description

Neutralizing antibodies play a major role in preventing and treating viral infections. However, viral escape evolution is a major obstacle to the effectiveness of vaccines and antibody therapeutics. In this project, we aim to identify common principles of viral escape evolution from humoral immunity in HIV-1, Influenza A virus, and SARS-CoV-2. We will investigate viral escape patterns from neutralization by antibodies of infected or vaccinated individuals. By closely collaborating with projects B2, B5, and Z2, we expect to inform on the emergence of future viral variants and on strategies to prevent viral escape evolution.
