In the proposed project we want to develop a simulation framework to investigate transient effects on hydraulic rod seals. Parameter studies can be performed in this framework covering unsteady phenomena on dynamic seals like acceleration or shock loads. Main topic of the simulation framework is the transient fluid-structure-interaction FSI. The results of our simulations can be utilized in optimizing seal design with respect to transient effects, which are usually the more demanding than steady state motion, which is nowadays still the standard design basis. Optimum design covers surface properties, material properties and geometry of the contacting components. The project considers:- FE-based modelling of structural dynmics of the seal incl. model order reduction for numerically efficient modelling of unsteady motion- Viscoelastic material description even in reduced model- Simulation of fluid behavior via transient Reynolds equation- Surface properties of contact partners (seal and counter surface): Fluid wall slip, wetting, roughness- Development of simulation framework covering all aforementioned effects optimized w.r.t. efficacy and robustness for replicating transient motion- Validation of modelling approach by experiments with hydraulic rod seal under steady and transient conditions
