We focus on the dynamic interplay between the actomyosin cell cortex and the cell membrane. Our aims are to unravel how actomyosin contractility contributes to lateral membrane organization, and how the coupling between actin and lipids affects the emergence of contractility. We plan to reconstitute a minimal system by building a synthetic actomyosin cortex on lipid bilayers, and will use optically switchable myosin motors to remote-control actomyosin contractility in space and time. Our project will reveal how molecular-scale force generation processes in actomyosin give rise to large-scale membrane-cortex dynamics.
