What role did Eisler's music and ideas play in Spain in the politically turbulent period of the Second Republic (1931-1939)? What were the composer's relationships with Spanish representatives of Republican culture and the labour movement? To what extent was Eisler influential as a composer in the country? Hanns Eisler in Republican Spain addresses these issues by examining the composer's artistic and political activities in Spain, his collaborations with the Spanish anti-fascist movement, his personal acquaintances to Spanish composers and writers, as well as the reception and influence of his music in the country from the late 1920s to the end of the Civil War. The project aims to fill a significant gap in the Eisler studies by thoroughly examining the composer's many-sided and little-known links to the country.
