The CRC is a paradigm example of Individual-Based Research (IBR), which studies individuals and their interactions with the (social) environment. D02 provides a philosophical framework for IBR in biology by analysing its central concepts, epistemology and integrative practices: How should we understand the concept of an individualised niche? What kind of complexity is IBR concerned with and which methodological challenges arise? How is integration achieved in IBR?
