Classical magnetic hybrid materials contain either magnetically soft or magnetically hard particles. Thus, they show either an active magnetorheological effect or exhibit passive magnetorheological properties after magnetization of the magnetically hard particles. Within this research association of German and Russian project groups, we combine magnetically hard and soft particles in an elastomeric matrix to provide a combination of active and passive magnetorheological properties. In this context, it is the central goal of the research association to synthesize tailored magnetic hybrid materials for sensor applications based on a detailed microscopic understanding of the material properties. Within the subproject described here, investigations of the magnetic hybrid materials for their technical implementation as actuator and sensor systems are in focus of the working program. The complex particle-particle and particle-matrix interactions occurring on the microscopic scale are the key to provide variable and adaptive material properties of functional elements made of these smart materials by means of a magnetic field control. Based on the results obtained in the previous application period, the research objectives of this prolongation proposal focus on the consistent model-based description of the vibrational behavior of magnetic hybrid materials and their properties as well as investigations of application-oriented prototype solutions and realization principles for such functional sensing elements. The main basic concepts of a sensor system with a variable sensitivity range are: an acceleration sensor for detection of external mechanical stimuli of the environment, and a pressure sensor for recognition of static/dynamic deformation of a perturbing object. The realization of such sensor systems with complex adaptive behavior and operating sensitivity is defined as new research subject. The implementation of the research objectives implies a close cooperation between the groups participating within the research association. In total, we expect that the project will provide detailed information about the relation between microstructural changes and macroscopic properties of the magnetic hybrid materials. This information will provide the basis for a prediction of certain material properties, which can be achieved by respective changes in composition of the material.
