The Hausdorff Center for Mathematics will make use of the unique opportunities provided bythe Excellence Strategy with the aim of establishing a sustainable world-class center for cutting-edge mathematical research in Germany, on a par with the mathematics departments of top universities in the US.Our goal is to identify and address the mathematical challenges of the 21st century. We want to foster fundamental research in mathematics and to respond to the demands of science and society with mathematical insights and tools. Particular challenges and foci of our researchagenda include:- cohomology theories in arithmetic and geometry,- representations of algebraic, p-adic, and Lie-type groups,- structure analysis and time evolution of singular spaces with synthetic Ricci bounds,- renormalization for singular stochastic PDEs with applications to solid state physics,- manifold learning and shape space theory,- microeconomics at the interface of information, mechanism, and market design,- mathematical modeling of immune therapy.HCM’s ambitious research program will capitalize on a team of internationally outstanding scientists, recognized with high honors (e.g., Fields medal, 4 Leibniz prizes, 4 ERC Advanced Grants), strengthened by strategic hirings (e.g., from Berkeley, Oxford, Paris, Los Angeles), and retained against highly competitive offers (e.g., from Chicago, Harvard, MIT, Northwestern, Oxford, Princeton, Yale). The proposed cluster will build upon the expertise of the currently funded cluster with novelresearch foci, new researchers – more than half of the future PIs came to Bonn only after theestablishment of the current cluster – and innovative measures. Interdisciplinary research units provide a new format for collaboration across fields. We aim to develop the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics into one of the leading institutes in the world for thematic programs in mathematics. Our internationally visible recruiting and training programs – with particular emphasis on early independence, gender balance, and internationalization – provide entry points for outstanding young researchers from all over the world into the German university system. We are building up a new innovative training program – unparalleled so far – for postdoctoral researchers based in Germany and worldwide, and we will establish a network of some of the best research centers and graduate schools in mathematics across the globe.
