The Research Training Group promotes scientific excellence by educating selected M.D./Ph.D. students from the basic and medical sciences by an internationally renowned faculty. Over the period of three years, the students engage in cutting edge research projects investigating the (patho)physiology of the lung in the interface of basic sciences and clinical medicine. Particular emphasis is put on the discovery of molecular mechanisms underlying diseases of the respiratory system that are potentially applicable to the development of new therapeutic strategies. The programme understands itself as a modern scientific career centre preparing its successful graduates for competitive careers in biomedical research in academia, industry, or related businesses. The educational foundation of this programme offers a broad range of theoretical knowledge and transferable methodological skills. At a very early stage of their scientific career, the students become independent in planning and conducting their research work with the aim of instilling confidence to present their findings in spoken and written reports (talks, publications, grant applications). The philosophy of the programme highly values interdisciplinary cooperations within the scientific community; it introduces research management strategies and transports teamwork skills in academic medicine.
On the basis of a synchronised study programme with a comprehensive curriculum, the Research Training Group aims to further an existing and synergistic, intercontinental research community in order to promote a lively exchange of junior and senior researchers over extended periods of time. This exchange will lead to mutual cross fertilisation of teaching concepts, thesis supervisions, cutting edge technology and their systematic application to advance the knowledge of the (patho)physiologic mechanisms underlying lung diseases.
The Justus Liebig University Medical School is ideally preconditioned to host the proposed programme: The academic setting on campus includes a Collaborative Research Group, two Clinical Research Groups, two Junior Research Groups and an EU 5th Framework Project, all addressing topics in the field of cardiopulmonary and respiratory diseases. All participating students will be integrated in the ongoing curriculum of the Research Training Group Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung (MBML) .
