The aim of this proposal is the systematic theoretical investigation ofexcitons in external electric and magnetic fields in a solid state likecuprous oxide. The important point is to learn about the combinedinteraction of excitons with the complete structure of the valenceband, the external fields, and the phonon states. Detailedcomparisons of computed and experimental spectra of excitons inexternal fields allow for the calibration of the field strengths and thedetermination of accurate material constants of cuprous oxide. Higherelectric field strengths as well as the exciton-phonon interaction leadto broadened line shapes in the photoabsorption spectra and give riseto fundamental quantum signatures of open many degrees systemssuch as Ericson fluctuations and exceptional points.
