Unknown architectural drawings in the Austrian National Library from Balthasar Neumanns estate concerning Southern German residences: A critical edition

Subject Area Art History
Term from 2017 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 371513212

The project aims on the scholarly annotated edition of a so far unknown portfolio of 72 drawings originating in the workshop of Balthasar Neumann. The now dissolved convolute is traceable in the sale of Neumann's estate in 1804. The drawings refer to several of his projects (concerning the palaces of Bamberg, Bruchsal, Karlsruhe, Mergentheim, Poppelsdorf; palacegarden Pommersfelden and the Reichskammergericht Wetzlar), but also to works of contemporaries (Bamberg, Mannheim, Pommersfelden, Rastatt). The portfolio provides new and crucial knowledge to the planning and history of the named buildings and therefore creates a completely new basis for research. Furthermore the convolute itself is an important source for the understanding not only of Neumann's creative process, but also of his criteria of collecting and archiving.
