Development of a Reliability-Based Design Approach for Unstiffened CFRP-Cylinders under Material and Structural Uncertainties

Subject Area Lightweight Construction, Textile Technology
Engineering Design, Machine Elements, Product Development
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 353469698

Unstiffened CFRP-Cylinders are interesting structural components forapplications with extreme requirements. For these thin lightweightstructures the critical failure occurs as buckling. The prediction of thecritical buckling load is determined by deterministic design proceduresusing empirical knock-down factors. However these are mostly basedupon tests of metal structures with different boundary conditions. Theresulting knock-down factors happen to be very conservative for thedesign of CFRP-Cylinders. In this research project the statisticaldatabase of experimental results shall be expanded for representativestructural components. Different measurements techniques areapplied to characterize the cylinders and to determine the materialand structural uncertainties. In addition to existing literature theexperimental results shall be classified into categories. Building on theInstitutes previous work and with the results of this project a reliabilitybaseddesign approach for unstiffened CFRP-Cylinders shall befurther developed with respect to structural and material uncertainties.
