Massives Ultraschall-MIMO (muMIMO)

Subject Area Electronic Semiconductors, Components and Circuits, Integrated Systems, Sensor Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering
Mechanics
Term from 2017 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 349435502

The introduction of the fifth generation of mobile communications (5G technology) promises significant societal changes given by high data rates, high system capacity, massive device connectivity, reduced latency as well as energy saving and cost reduction. The main goal of the research project is the fundamental investigation of massive MIMO (multiple input multiple output) communication using guided ultrasonic waves. The work programme consists of three interdependent work packages (WP): WP1 includes the numerical modelling of guided wave propagation using FSATs (frequency steerable acoustic transducers) combined with an experimental validation of the numerical model. WP2 aims at massive ultrasonic MIMO signaling techniques that will be analyzed with the physical constraints given by the complex nature of guided wave propagation. Finally, WP3 brings the two initial work packages together and investigates massive ultrasonic MIMO communication using miniaturized sensor nodes. In the experiment, an energy efficient operation of acoustic communication will be investigated.
