Subject Area Asian Studies
Term from 2017 to 2020

The online journal Bunron ("Text and Theory") publishes articles focusing on literary studies and philological issues within the field of Japanese Studies. By creating a forum for articles, reviews and conference reports in an easily accessible online journal current philological and literary research about Japanese literature will be bundled. The Bunron editors put emphasis on a theoretical approach to current literary issues. The journal is, however, not limited to contributions about canonical literary texts but is also open for articles from contiguous disciplines like philosophy, history, cultural studies or linguistics which take a text based approach. Also articles dealing with comparative issues are welcome as far as they have a focus on Japanese literature. The launching of the online journal Bunron has given more visibility to literary studies in the field of text oriented Japanese studies. As an open-access journal, Bunron is an up to date solution for sharing the results of research in an uncomplicated way and publish articles rather promptly within the framework of a double blind peer reviewed process. Discussion among colleagues has already benefited from this kind of publication during the last three years since the launching of the journal. To bring together different traditions of scientific writing, contributions can be handed in in German, Japanese, English and French. Bunron establishes through its multilingualism an important forum for international exchange which is not restricted to one language, like English, only. Given languages always inform the formulation of research questions and argumentation, and multilingualism has always been essential for philological research. As a multilingual journal Bunron enhances the interaction in the field of Japanese Literary Studies between the North American, Japanese and European traditions.
