FOR 860: New Process Chains for Composites: Integration of Preforming, Impregnation, Forming and Curing
Subject Area
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term
from 2007 to 2012
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 33627655
The aim of the Research Unit is the development and investigation of new process chains to manufacture high volumes of continuous fibre reinforced plastic parts. This shall be enabled by a high level of automation of the whole processing chain, beginning from the roving to the finished product. Therefore, carbon fibres and glass fibres will be used as reinforcements, while the matrices are focused on epoxy and polyurethane resins.
Altogether three process chains ("gap impregnation", "spray impregnation" and "high pressure impregnation") will be researched, which are divided in eight subprojects. Within the process chains the production of preforms, the impregnation, the forming and the curing are examined. Additionally, fundamental research of the handling and the design/construction of tools will be done.
The task of the preforming subproject (TP 1 and 2) is the production of manageable and near-net-shaped preforms. Then these preforms are just placed into the tool where further processing (impregnation) can happen. The investigation of impregnation, forming and curing will be done in the subprojects 4, 5, 6 and 8. Therefore, common techniques are further developed and new processes will be built up to realise short cycle times. The subprojects 3 and 7 will research handling techniques and tooling.
By considering the whole process chains the manufacturing of structural fibre reinforced parts with a fibre content of more than 50 percent in short cycle times of less than 10 minutes shall be enabled. This research stands for developing key technologies for the processing of fibre reinforced plastics.
