Patterned organic molecular architecture by vacuum deposition
Final Report Abstract
A lithographical strategy for ultra-high resolution patterning of organic functional materials was proposed and demonstrated via patterned growth. The investigation involves template fabrication, growth dynamics of molecules at surfaces, nucleation control and patterning of organic molecules, device fabrication and characterization. During the funding period, the following advances were achieved: 1. With the help of crystall growth and solvent vapor annealing, sub-micrometer channel length crystalline OFET arrays were demonstrated with improved mobility in comparison to those of amorphous ones. Furthermore, suppressed cross-talk between the adjacent devices and basic logical units were also demonstrated through the technique developed. 2. Additionally, patterned growth strategy can also be applied to fabricate micro-OLED arrays with pixel size down to a sub-micrometer. Red, green and blue micro-OLEDs were demonstrated on both rigid and flexible substrates. Using conducting polymer such as PPy, the performances of the OLED devices can be improved owing to the increase of transparency. 3. With newly designed and synthesized thiols, carbenes (NHC Ipr) and silanes the interfaces of organic/eletrode were modified to improve the contact of the interface area, which is more significant in the short channel cases. Enhanced performances are demonstrated, althrough there is still space left for the future improvement. The achievements in patterned grwoth of provide alternative ways to process organic thin films in electronic and opto-electronic field, as well as the physical mechanisms were also investigated. The work reported here should be of high interests to a wide readership in organic electronics such as micro-displays and flexible electronics.
