Hyperon creation within neutron stars and their impact on the equation of state (EOS) necessitate a precise measurement of the interactions among hyperons and nucleons. Current data points to dominantly attractive interactions and a too soft QCD EOS for neutron stars. Axions are a natural part of QCD and an almost unavoidable solution of the strong CP problem of QCD. We study the impact of a condensed axion on the EOS which can provide a solution to this puzzle. The properties of axions and axion-like particles change in-medium and we reconsider astrophysical limits and the viability of relaxion models.
