Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Physical Properties of Remeika Phases

Subject Area Solid State and Surface Chemistry, Material Synthesis
Term from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 325295543

The proposed project closely connects syntheses, crystal structure solutions, physical properties investigations and theoretical studies of intermetallic compounds with 3:4:13 stoichiometry and cubic Yb3Rh4Sn13 type of structure, known in the literature as Remeika phases. The suggested study focuses on the growth of single crystals from In, Sn and Pb fluxes as well as syntheses of bulk samples of Sc3Ir4Si13, Y3{Rh, Ir}4Ge13, Yb3Co4Ge13, La3Rh4Sn13, {Sc, Y}5Rh6Sn18 und {Sc, Y}3Ir4Sn13 compounds and will investigate the relation between crystal structure and the respective electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic properties. Two phenomena are of special interest: superconductivity and valence fluctuations. Detailed study of the crystal structure and underlying inherent physical properties of the chosen compounds will give a strong impetus to the theoretical understanding of the electronic properties of this class of materials.
