Project Description

Mutations in genes encoding mitochondrial proteins underlie many human diseases with more constantly being discovered. In addition gradual decline in mitochondrial function plays a role in aging and complex disease phenotypes such as neurodegeneration and cancer. Our group brings together scientist with complementary expertise that share a passion for understanding the cross talk of mitochondria and the cellular environment. We propose to use this unifying opportunity to shine a new light on an unexplored aspect of mitochondrial biology – how the cross talk of mitochondria and the cell promotes homeostasis of the mitochondrial proteome(proteostasis) in health and disease.
