iDiv research aims at a better understanding of the dynamics of biodiversity and ecosystem services in coupled socialecological systems and the development of effective management strategies. Contributions to assessments at the sciencepolicy interface, engaging multiple stakeholders in monitoring, along with research on management and governance of biodiversity and ecosystem services, are key elements of these activities. Future work will build on recent activities of iDiv researchers, such as studying the impact of indirect socioeconomic and direct drivers on biodiversity, assessing progress towards the Aichi 2020 targets, valuation of ecosystem services, assessing the effectiveness of protected area systems and developing novel ecosystem restoration strategies. The research questions are integrative, inter- and transdisciplinary, requiring collaboration between different iDiv research groups with natural and social science backgrounds, as well as knowledgesharing between scientists, environmental managers, policymakers and other stakeholders. The work is often developed in the context of international initiatives such as GEO BON, IPBES and the CBD.
