The design of water infrastructure is mainly based on design values, which are determined using extreme value methods. The basis are observed data of the natural system (e.g. river system). The data have to fulfill some requirements in order to yield reliable results. The requirements are homogeneity, independency and stationarity. Natural time series do not fulfill these requeriments in most cases, thus uncertainties arise. The objectives of the project are (1) the quantification of the influence of each parameter on the extreme value results and (2) to improve the extreme value methods in order to gain more robust results in the presence of non-homogeneity, dependency and non-stationarity.
